Professional Background in one sentence: 

Forty years of IT experience including ten years as a CIO for two companies in Virginia.

Describe your typical day.

I visit one of my three clients and assist them in problem solving. Activities may include developing a request for proposal to an IT vendor, participating in developing the organization’s strategic plan, reviewing a proposal for IT enhancements, suggesting technical solutions and reviewing project plans as needed. I am also asked to present to their Board of Directors an annual assessment of their IT infrastructure.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job? 

The most rewarding part of my job is when I make my clients’ operations more productive and at the same time reduce their costs.

Tell us about the most memorable moment of your career. 

I guess that would be the day I accepted the job as CIO for McKesson Medical Surgical here in Richmond. During my tenure there I headed up a great team of IT people that made it possible for the company to acquire five other companies in four years while implementing an ERP.

What career advice do you have for someone just starting out in IT?  

I would tell anyone starting out in IT to always make sure you understand what the requirements of a project are before you commit to any work effort.  Remember that the business needs to see a return on their investment (ROI) whenever you bring forth a recommendation or propose new technologies.

What will be the biggest tech trend of the next 5 years? 

I see two major trends in IT over the next five years, Artificial Intelligence and Security.

Do you have a favorite software program?   

My favorite software program is Microsoft Excel. There is not a better tool for listing, tracking and analyzing the data associated with a work effort.

What’s your favorite thing to do in the Richmond area?  

Playing golf and going to the Richmond Forum during the season.

Describe your favorite meal.  

Pasta with my wife’s incredible Bolognese sauce.

What’s your favorite song?

Do you have a hidden talent?

If I have any they are well hidden because I’m not aware of them.

What’s your favorite thing to drink in the morning?

Coffee, Coffee, Coffee

The best movie you’ve ever seen is:

I love all the movies that Steven Spielberg has Directed, Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park, Close Encounter and Saving Private Ryan, to name a few. He is an incredible story teller.

What’s your most prized possession?

I don’t have a most prized possession; my family and friends are what I value the most.
