Getting Smarter with John Jezek

>At Smart Resources, we aren’t just a big group of IT consultants or tech minds. We’re a family. Our team is not only one of the most skilled in the country, but also one of the most interesting. Each month, we feature a conversation with one of our great consultants so that you can get to know us better. This month, say hello to Senior Consultant John Jezek!
John JezekName: John Jezek

Position: Senior Consultant

Years with Smart Resources: 6

Professional Background in one sentence:

20+ years in IT with the recent 6 years being focused on Program and Project Management.

Describe your typical day.

As the Lead PM, my typical day starts out at my client making sure that my programs and projects are moving as they should and also supporting my PM’s with whatever they need. The pace never slows down.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

I support 5 PM’s and work side by side with an extremely talented team of Business Analysts. We are a very tight team that has each other’s backs on a daily basis. Our ePMO is well respected with a portfolio of over 20 programs and projects.

Tell us about the most memorable moment of your career.

I ran a renovation project that encompassed re-cabling the building, consolidating network closets, and upgrading security for a 4-story building. On the second day (on the second floor) a water pipe busted and it rained on the first floor staff. It is a lot funnier now than it was then.

What career advice do you have for someone just starting out in IT?

No matter if you are just out of school or making a career change, be willing to get your feet wet and do whatever the client needs done. Development, Testing, Release Management, and Help Desk are all ways to break into IT and find your niche. My IT career started on a Help Desk. We did everything from hardware, software, networking, and telecom. Also, be willing to take on assignments that no one else wants to work on. You will gain the respect of your management and may find out something new that interests you.

What will be the biggest tech trend of the next 5 years?

I believe that more and more companies will start / improve their analytics and data visualization.

Do you have a favorite software program?

Not really. I like productivity software and software that tracks things.

What’s your favorite thing to do in the Richmond area?

I really enjoy playing golf with my family and friends.

Describe your favorite meal.

Those that know me know it’s BWs.

What’s your favorite song?

I would have to say “Listen Like Thieves” from INXS.

Do you have a hidden talent?

All of my talent is hidden. I do occasionally sit behind a drum kit and keep time. I also like to shoot pool. I wouldn’t say it’s a talent, but I enjoy it.

What’s your favorite thing to drink in the morning?

Coffee.

The best movie you’ve ever seen is:

National Treasure.

What’s your most prized possession?

My cigars.
