SUMMARY:Richmond AWS User Group
DESCRIPTION:Unus multorum: The Anatomy of a Distributed System\nABOUT BRIAN:\nBrian is perhaps the most talented cloud architect I’ve ever encountered\, and whenever he talks I listen. You don’t want to miss this session! \nABOUT THE TOPIC:\nLambda@Edge\, IoT Greengrass\, and EventBridge are some of the newest Amazon Web Services products that distribute compute resources away from a centralized system. This trend is nothing new\, but rather a continuation of the paradigm shift brought on by the cloud and mobile devices. Let’s take a deeply technical dive into a multi-region distributed system and look at its context in the evolution of computing from the terminal to the cloud. Along the way\, we’ll consider the possibly heretical take that the cloud paradigm shift is just beginning and that what is holding us back may be ourselves!

SUMMARY:RVA.js
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Abstract \nAngular Custom Elements are a recent addition to the Angular framework that allows you to create exportable components. \nWhenever we create an Angular Element\, we create a new custom HTML element that can be used on any webpage\, even if that webpage does not use Angular at all. That way\, you can have Angular components displayed on a page that uses React\, Vue\, Angular JS\, or even some HTML generated with JSP\, PHP\, ASP\, etc. \nUsing Elements can be a great way to get started with Angular without having to migrate an entire application to Angular. \nThere are 5 Main Reasons to use Angular Elements\n1. Embedding Angular Components Into Non-Angular Applications\n2. Embedding Angular Components Into Content Sites\n3. Implementing Dynamic Angular Applications (“Dashboard”/CMS)\n4. Upgrading from AngularJS to Angular\n5. Independent Deployment

SUMMARY:Richmond SQL Server Users Group
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, we will look at the new Query Store feature in SQL Server 2016\, 2017\, and 2019. Query Store tracks changes in execution plans\, allowing you to easily view performance differences and revert to older plans with a few clicks of the mouse in 2016. Then in 2017\, Microsoft added wait stats per query plan and Automatic Plan Correction capabilities. Allowing DBAs more tools to troubleshoot fires with and a way to automatically resolve issues. In this session\, we will walk through the features of the Query Store\, so you can understand how to use them in SQL Server 2016\, 2017\, and 2019

SUMMARY:Richmond SQL Server Users Group
DESCRIPTION:Azure applications (PowerBI\, Power Apps\, Flow & Azure Data Factory\, etc) can greatly enhance business processes. Most organizations\, however\, have already invested in on-premises infrastructure for storing their data (database & file servers). The problem therefore is: How can you use on-prem data sources with cloud-based (Azure) applications? \nIn this session we will look at using an Azure On-Premises Data Gateway to integrate local (on-prem) data sources with Azure-based applications. \nSpeaker Bio \nJamie Wick is the Systems & Database Engineer for William & Mary and has been working with databases for the past 10+ years. His background includes working for several years as a SQL SysAdmin for the University of Queensland (Australia)\, and a Master’s degree in Computer Information Systems from Boston University. He is a volunteer & speaker at regional SQL events (User Groups/SQLSaturdays)\, helps run the Richmond SQL Server Users Group and SQLSaturday RVA events\, and is an avid photographer.

SUMMARY:Richmond SQL Server Users Group
DESCRIPTION:The process of designing a relational database is not overly complex\, and may be done by almost anyone on the development team. The process requires one to take the time to understand the requirements\, when they exist\, and apply a straightforward set of transforms to produce table structures that meets the needs. The tough part is that the process requires time and experience\, neither of which anyone has enough of. In this session\, to help the attendee differentiate right-enough designs from overly simple or overly complex designs\, we will look at a variety of database snippets\, each inspired from a real life design. We will discuss the pros and cons of the approach taken\, and consider possible remediations to learn from a failure that was made by someone else. \nAbout Louis Davidson: \nLouis Davidson has worked in the IT industry for over 20 years as a corporate database developer and architect. He has been a Microsoft SQL Server MVP for 15 years and has written six books on database design and other SQL Server topics. He has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. You can read more about Louis at http://drsql.org.

SUMMARY:PyRVA (Python User Group - Richmond\, VA)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly speaker meeting! \nHow We Built It – Swayance.com and a lot of Python \nSwayance is a fashion/tech start-up located in RVA. We’re a platform that connects online shoppers with product reviewers of similar size + fit\, culture + creed\, and style + taste. We have two main goals: \n1. Make it simple for e-commerce shoppers to find products they love! By aggregating product reviews from fashion retailers\, our users can quickly filter them to identify style by style\, size\, and culture.\n2. Build robust machine learning models that can help retailers learn more about the buying habits\, opinions\, and trends across multiple channels. \nIn this session we’ll talk a bit about what Swayance is and how we do what we do. Then we’ll deep dive into how it was built using mostly Python. We’ll look at code\, walk through what it does\, talk about why we made certain decisions\, and look at how it all runs on AWS for mostly free. \nThis talk is meant to be very interactive. See something you think we did wrong\, speak up! Questioning our choices of Python packages\, yell it out! Have a question about anything\, don’t wait till the end! We’re tech geeks without egos\, and love to talk shop. \nSchedule:\nNetworking 6:30 PM\nSpeaker 7:00 PM
