SUMMARY:Richmond SQL Server Users Group
DESCRIPTION:The process of designing a relational database is not overly complex\, and may be done by almost anyone on the development team. The process requires one to take the time to understand the requirements\, when they exist\, and apply a straightforward set of transforms to produce table structures that meets the needs. The tough part is that the process requires time and experience\, neither of which anyone has enough of. In this session\, to help the attendee differentiate right-enough designs from overly simple or overly complex designs\, we will look at a variety of database snippets\, each inspired from a real life design. We will discuss the pros and cons of the approach taken\, and consider possible remediations to learn from a failure that was made by someone else. \nAbout Louis Davidson: \nLouis Davidson has worked in the IT industry for over 20 years as a corporate database developer and architect. He has been a Microsoft SQL Server MVP for 15 years and has written six books on database design and other SQL Server topics. He has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. You can read more about Louis at http://drsql.org.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly speaker meeting! \nHow We Built It – Swayance.com and a lot of Python \nSwayance is a fashion/tech start-up located in RVA. We’re a platform that connects online shoppers with product reviewers of similar size + fit\, culture + creed\, and style + taste. We have two main goals: \n1. Make it simple for e-commerce shoppers to find products they love! By aggregating product reviews from fashion retailers\, our users can quickly filter them to identify style by style\, size\, and culture.\n2. Build robust machine learning models that can help retailers learn more about the buying habits\, opinions\, and trends across multiple channels. \nIn this session we’ll talk a bit about what Swayance is and how we do what we do. Then we’ll deep dive into how it was built using mostly Python. We’ll look at code\, walk through what it does\, talk about why we made certain decisions\, and look at how it all runs on AWS for mostly free. \nThis talk is meant to be very interactive. See something you think we did wrong\, speak up! Questioning our choices of Python packages\, yell it out! Have a question about anything\, don’t wait till the end! We’re tech geeks without egos\, and love to talk shop. \nSchedule:\nNetworking 6:30 PM\nSpeaker 7:00 PM

Armenian culture isn’t one you might be exposed to very often\, so this festival is an exciting opportunity to experience Armenian food and traditions first hand. SUMMARY:RVA.js
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Abstract \nChatbots are common these days and many messaging platforms (such as Slack) provide toolkits to support custom bots. However\, most of these toolkits are not sophisticated enough to comprehend the user and instead rely on keywords or arcane slash commands. To build a bot that could converse with a user in a more natural and conversational way you typically need to leverage specialized AI techniques such as NLP or Machine Learning. While not out of reach\, these skills are not in the toolkit of the average developer. \nFortunately\, you no longer need to be an NLP or Machine Learning wizard to build a powerful conversational interface. In this talk\, Jay will introduce you to Google’s DialogFlow service and show you how you can use your JavaScript skills to speak with your users. During the first part of the talk\, you will learn the fundamentals of DialogFlow such as agents\, intents\, entities\, contexts\, and fulfillments. In the second half\, Jay will LIVE CODE a simple chatbot using DialogFlow and demo a more complete version built ahead of time. \nAbout Jay Hogan\nI wanted to share this information about Jay because I think knowing more about our speaker might influence your decision to attend or not. Jay Hogan spoke at the 1st RVA Javascript Conference in 2017 and since then\, based on feedback from attendees\, NO OTHER speaker has graded out higher as a presenter than Jay. The feedback on Jay was very positive and people felt great leaving his speaker session. Just wanted everyone to know the type of speaker Jay is and he is not to be missed! \nAs always\, the meeting is free… Looking forward to seeing you.

SUMMARY:Richmond SQL Server Users Group
DESCRIPTION:Geoff Johnson-Working with SSIS Script Component: Some Tips Learned the Hard Way\nSQL Server Integration Services is relatively new to me; I started working with it about two years ago. As I have been using the Script Component\, I have run into some challenges that I imagine many new users of that tool have also encountered. Now I have a love-hate relationship with the Script Component because it still annoys me in certain ways\, but it also makes some transformation steps much easier. In this presentation\, I’ll share what I’ve learned while using the Script Component to do conversion projects pulling data from Excel and Access into SQL Server. If you’re just getting started with SSIS and the Script Component\, this information should save you some time and frustration. And if you’re an old hand at it\, maybe you can help me – and others — overcome those annoying bits.

SUMMARY:Richmond Java Users Group
DESCRIPTION:Dependency Injection seems like this SUPER complex topic that only the most senior developers understand. At the end of the day\, it’s just “inversion of control” where instances of objects/classes are provided to you\, instead of created by you. Kotlin’s language features allow us to do this concisely\, without a library\, and in this talk I’ll show you how to DO IT YOURSELF. This talk will demystify dependency injection and help you understand the huge benefits it provides for testing\, maintainability and modularity.

SUMMARY:Richmond SQL Server Users Group
DESCRIPTION:Ever had a manager standing over your shoulder\, wanting to know why an instance is running slow or if it can handle additional workload? What information would you use to answer these questions? If only you knew what performance metrics to collect and had them for your existing instances to answer these questions.\nIn this session\, we will discuss sp_whoisactive and Query Store. Then we will be combining three open source tools – Telegraf\, InfluxDB\, and Grafana – into an inexpensive system that collects performance metrics you can use to troubleshoot issues and answer important questions about your SQL Server instances\, including your Linux SQL Server instances. We will learn what metrics to collect\, how to use the tools to collect performance metrics and then we’ll put it all together in an interactive dashboard for easy visualization.
