SUMMARY:Scrum RVA - Scrum Turns 21\, Are We Done Yet?
DESCRIPTION:IEEE Computer Society is hosting Dave West from Scrum.org with a presentation on “Scrum Turns 21\, Are We there Yet!”. This is a joint meeting with IEEE Computer Society\, ScrumRVA\, and Agile Richmond at Capital One West Creek Commons Room 281. \nTO REGISTER for this event visit http://cxs.bz/DaveWest for you free eventbrite ticket! There is limited availability and names must be provided to security prior to the start of the meeting. \nFOR DIRECTIONS visit http://cxs.bz/directions \nScrum Turns 21\, Are We Done Yet! \nAbstract: 90% of Agile teams are using Scrum. With over ½ a million people trained and certified. Scrum has become\, for many the de-facto standard in Agile team organization. But what is next for Scrum? Will Scrum just become the ‘way you build software’ rather than something special or unique? In this talk we discuss the success and future of Scrum and what needs to happen to Scrum to continue its relevance. We describe how measurement\, scaling and DevOps need to be weaved into Scrum to not only ensure its relevance\, but also help the profession of software development improve. \nBio: Dave West is the product owner at scrum.org. In this capacity\, he engages with partners\, and the community to drive scrum.org’s strategy and the overall market position of Scrum. Prior to joining the Ken Schwaber and the team at Scrum.org he was Chief Product Officer at Tasktop where he was responsible for product management\, engineering and architecture. As a member of the company’s executive management team was also instrumental in growing Tasktop from a services business into a VC backed product business with a team of almost 100.As one of the foremost industry experts on software development and deployment\, West has helped advance many modern software development processes\, including the Unified process and Agile methods. He is a frequent keynote at major industry conferences and is a widely published author of articles and research reports\, along with his acclaimed book: Head First Object-Oriented Analysis and Design\, that helped define new software modeling and application development processes. He led the development of the Rational Unified Process (RUP) for IBM/Rational. After IBM/Rational\, West returned to consulting and managed Ivar Jacobson Consulting for North America. Then he served as vice president\, research director at Forrester Research\, where he worked with leading IT organizations and solutions providers to define\, drive and advance Agile-based methodology and tool breakthroughs in the enterprise.

SUMMARY:Armenian Food Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Armenian Food Festival has been put on each year for 60 years\, so you know it must be amazing! And it is – we think the secret is in the philo dough. Armenian culture isn’t one you might be exposed to very often\, so this festival is an exciting opportunity to experience Armenian food and traditions first hand. You’ll probably dream about the Derev (stuffed grape leaves)\, Lamajoon (Armenian Meat Pie)\, or the Bourma (rolled philo dough filled with walnuts) all year long. Luckily\, it’s a safe bet the festival will be back for a 61st year!

SUMMARY:RVA.js
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Abstract \nChatbots are common these days and many messaging platforms (such as Slack) provide toolkits to support custom bots. However\, most of these toolkits are not sophisticated enough to comprehend the user and instead rely on keywords or arcane slash commands. To build a bot that could converse with a user in a more natural and conversational way you typically need to leverage specialized AI techniques such as NLP or Machine Learning. While not out of reach\, these skills are not in the toolkit of the average developer. \nFortunately\, you no longer need to be an NLP or Machine Learning wizard to build a powerful conversational interface. In this talk\, Jay will introduce you to Google’s DialogFlow service and show you how you can use your JavaScript skills to speak with your users. During the first part of the talk\, you will learn the fundamentals of DialogFlow such as agents\, intents\, entities\, contexts\, and fulfillments. In the second half\, Jay will LIVE CODE a simple chatbot using DialogFlow and demo a more complete version built ahead of time. \nAbout Jay Hogan\nI wanted to share this information about Jay because I think knowing more about our speaker might influence your decision to attend or not. Jay Hogan spoke at the 1st RVA Javascript Conference in 2017 and since then\, based on feedback from attendees\, NO OTHER speaker has graded out higher as a presenter than Jay. The feedback on Jay was very positive and people felt great leaving his speaker session. Just wanted everyone to know the type of speaker Jay is and he is not to be missed! \nAs always\, the meeting is free… Looking forward to seeing you.

SUMMARY:Richmond SQL Server Users Group
DESCRIPTION:Geoff Johnson-Working with SSIS Script Component: Some Tips Learned the Hard Way\nSQL Server Integration Services is relatively new to me; I started working with it about two years ago. As I have been using the Script Component\, I have run into some challenges that I imagine many new users of that tool have also encountered. Now I have a love-hate relationship with the Script Component because it still annoys me in certain ways\, but it also makes some transformation steps much easier. In this presentation\, I’ll share what I’ve learned while using the Script Component to do conversion projects pulling data from Excel and Access into SQL Server. If you’re just getting started with SSIS and the Script Component\, this information should save you some time and frustration. And if you’re an old hand at it\, maybe you can help me – and others — overcome those annoying bits.

SUMMARY:Richmond Java Users Group
DESCRIPTION:Dependency Injection seems like this SUPER complex topic that only the most senior developers understand. At the end of the day\, it’s just “inversion of control” where instances of objects/classes are provided to you\, instead of created by you. Kotlin’s language features allow us to do this concisely\, without a library\, and in this talk I’ll show you how to DO IT YOURSELF. This talk will demystify dependency injection and help you understand the huge benefits it provides for testing\, maintainability and modularity.

SUMMARY:Richmond SQL Server Users Group
DESCRIPTION:Ever had a manager standing over your shoulder\, wanting to know why an instance is running slow or if it can handle additional workload? What information would you use to answer these questions? If only you knew what performance metrics to collect and had them for your existing instances to answer these questions.\nIn this session\, we will discuss sp_whoisactive and Query Store. Then we will be combining three open source tools – Telegraf\, InfluxDB\, and Grafana – into an inexpensive system that collects performance metrics you can use to troubleshoot issues and answer important questions about your SQL Server instances\, including your Linux SQL Server instances. We will learn what metrics to collect\, how to use the tools to collect performance metrics and then we’ll put it all together in an interactive dashboard for easy visualization.

SUMMARY:RVA Software Development User Group
DESCRIPTION:Building platforms is hard. Building platforms that scale is even harder. We will walk through applying principles that will open the up the doors for discovering microservices within our platforms. Ultimately we will learn that how we work is just as important as what we do. \nAs a lead software engineer at Terazo\, Michael Blakeney is on a mission to enable\, support\, and encourage the efforts of multiple teams engaged in delivering platforms that scale to customers. Leveraging devops principles\, cloud technologies like Amazon Web Services\, and solid software engineering practices\, Michael loves designing and building modern cloud solutions. With experience in applying agile principles\, he leads engineering teams to build applications that solve complex problems. Throughout his career Michael has worked with teams in developing serverless API backends\, modern database applications\, data migrations\, and well architected cloud based solutions.

SUMMARY:Richmond SQL Server Users Group
DESCRIPTION:Recent years have seen an increase in end-user reporting\, where reporting tools\, notably Tableau\, are provided to business teams in order to offload analytics and reporting from Information Technology groups. In practice\, this has often resulted in the rise of business reporting teams with varying levels of database and SQL skill. In this presentation\, we’ll discuss what it’s like to work on a business side reporting team\, capabilities and limitations of Tableau\, and business reporting team experiences with source data and data layer teams.
